The Highland Lakes community was built on what used to be a large citrus grove.  After a harsh winter in 1972, many of the trees were destroyed.  Construction on what would become one of the best 55+ communities in the state began that same year.  Multiple phases were built spanning more than two decades and were completed in 1991.  Between condos, villas, and single-family homes, there are more than 2,600 homes in this beautiful neighborhood. Highland Lakes is a very active community featuring many amenities and activities.  The Clubhouse regularly hosts cards, billiards, dinners, dances, and fitness classes.  There is a pool, tennis courts, pickleball, shuffleboard, bocce ball, and 27 holes on the executive golf course.  The Lake Tarpon Lodge is mainly used for club meetings, fitness activities, and other community gatherings. The Lodge also features an outdoor pool and patio with a picnic area complete with BBQ grills along with access to Lake Tarpon. Two Highland Lakes pontoon boats are docked at the Lodge and take residents and their guests on two trips daily around the lake with a stop at a local restaurant.
Homes range in size from a one bedroom, one bath, and 700 square foot villa up to three bedrooms, two baths, and nearly 2,300 square foot single family residence.  Current HOA/monthly fees start at $126 (subject to change) and are dependent on location in the neighborhood and type of residence. Prices start at around $150,000.
